NTT DATA interview process and practice questions

NTT DATA's careers FAQ describes a recruiter screen, a technical interview or assessment (a live technical discussion, a case-based conversation, a problem-solving exercise or a test on a third-party platform) and a hiring manager interview, usually between one and three interviews in all, with steps that vary by business unit, location and role. It publishes four values: Respect every voice, Think big. Be bold., Deliver the outcome, and Win together.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

The interview process

  1. 1Online application, with an online aptitude or coding test for some graduate roles
  2. 2Recruiter screen on your background, career goals and fit for the role
  3. 3Technical interview or assessment: a live discussion, a case-based conversation or an online test
  4. 4Hiring manager interview on communication, adaptability, collaboration and client work
  5. 5For some roles, a further conversation on strategic thinking and values

What interviewers listen for

  • Respect every voice
  • Think big. Be bold.
  • Deliver the outcome
  • Win together
  • Integrity and accountability
  • A collaboration mindset
  • Growth orientation
  • Readiness to work with clients

Behavioral questions

  1. Tell me about a time you changed your mind because of someone else's input.

    A good answer covers

    • Your original view and whose input changed it
    • How you made room for their view, especially if they were junior or quiet
    • What the better decision led to
  2. Tell me about a time you proposed a bolder solution than the one people expected.

    A good answer covers

    • The expected option and why it wasn't enough
    • Your proposal, and how you handled doubts and risks
    • What happened, including any part that didn't work
  3. Tell me about a time you delivered under pressure when the outcome mattered to a client or user.

    A good answer covers

    • What was at stake for them and how tight the time was
    • What you prioritised and what you dropped
    • The outcome, ideally with a number
  4. Tell me about a win you shared with a team. What was your part?

    A good answer covers

    • The goal and how the work was split
    • Your own contribution, in the first person
    • How the team celebrated or shared credit
  5. Tell me about a time you worked with colleagues in another country or time zone.

    A good answer covers

    • Who they were and what made working together hard
    • The habits you used: written handovers, overlap hours, clear owners
    • What it achieved and what you'd do differently

Role and technical questions

  1. Walk me through how you'd plan moving a client's on-premise application to the cloud.

    A good answer covers

    • Assessing the application, its data and its dependencies first
    • Choosing an approach: move as it is, re-platform or rebuild parts
    • Testing, a cut-over plan with rollback, and cost and security checks
  2. A client reports that a nightly data load is missing records. What would you check first?

    A good answer covers

    • Which records, since when, and whether the source sent them
    • The job's logs, filters, rejected rows and any schema change
    • Fixing and reloading safely, then telling the client what happened
  3. Explain microservices versus a monolith, and when you'd keep the monolith.

    A good answer covers

    • A monolith is one deployable application; microservices split it into small services
    • Microservices help teams scale and release separately but add network and operations complexity
    • Keeping a monolith for a small team or a simple, stable product
  4. A client wants to cut support tickets by a third. How would you work out where they come from and what to fix?

    A good answer covers

    • Grouping tickets by type, product, channel and customer
    • Finding the few causes behind most tickets
    • Fixes such as product changes, self-service help or automation, and how you'd track the drop
  5. How would you explain a serious technical risk to a client executive in two minutes?

    A good answer covers

    • The risk in business terms: what could happen and how likely
    • The options, with cost and time for each
    • Your recommendation and the decision you need from them
  6. For experienced candidates: describe an engagement where the client's priorities changed. How did you adjust the plan?

    A good answer covers

    • What changed and why
    • How you re-planned scope, people and dates with the client
    • The result and the relationship afterwards

Why NTT DATA? Fit and HR questions

  1. Tell me about yourself and what brings you to NTT DATA.

    A good answer covers

    • Your background and the skills most relevant to this role
    • One achievement with a result
    • A specific reason for applying, in under two minutes
  2. Why NTT DATA, and what do you know about the industries it serves?

    A good answer covers

    • Something specific: a service line, an industry or recent work you read about
    • How your skills fit it
    • What you hope to learn there
  3. What would you want to achieve in your first six months here?

    A good answer covers

    • Learning the team, the client and the systems quickly
    • One or two concrete contributions you'd aim for
    • A question back about how success is judged in the role

Tips

  • NTT DATA's FAQ says the technical stage can be a live discussion, a case, a problem-solving exercise or an online test; ask your recruiter which to expect.
  • Prepare client stories: the hiring manager interview looks at client engagement, communication and adaptability.
  • Have a short example ready for each of the four values, especially delivering an outcome and winning as a team.
  • Steps vary by business unit, location and role, so read the job post closely and plan for each stage it names.

Practise it out loud

A mock interview asks the way NTT DATA's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
