Company interview guide
Deutsche Bank interview process and practice questions
Deutsche Bank's interviews usually combine competency questions, answered with examples, with technical or case questions for the division you apply to. For early careers its careers site describes online tests, a virtual interview (pre-recorded for some roles), then an assessment centre or super day; in India, graduate hiring is usually through campus. The bank publishes four behaviours it expects of its people, starting with 'We act responsibly to inspire trust'.
As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

- 4Assessment centre or super day, often with competency interviews, case studies and a technical interview

Behavioral questions
Tell me about a time you were trusted with something sensitive. How did you handle it?
A good answer covers
- What was sensitive about it: information, money, a relationship or a deadline
- The care you took and the rules you followed
- How you kept others informed without oversharing
Tell me about a time you spotted a problem nobody had asked you to fix, and solved it.
A good answer covers
- How you noticed it and why others hadn't
- What you did, and who you brought in
- The result, with a number if you have one
Describe a decision where you had to weigh a quick win against the longer-term cost.
A good answer covers
- The two options and what each would cost or bring
- How you decided, and with whom
- How it turned out and what you learned about trade-offs
Tell me about a time you worked with teams that had different priorities to deliver one result.
A good answer covers
- Each team's goal and where they clashed
- How you found common ground or escalated sensibly
- What was delivered and how the relationship held up
Tell me about a piece of feedback that changed how you work.
A good answer covers
- The feedback, quoted fairly, and how it felt
- What you changed in practice
- Evidence that the change stuck
Role and technical questions
Walk me through what happens between a client placing a trade and the trade settling.
A good answer covers
- Execution and booking, then confirmation and matching with the counterparty
- Clearing and settlement: cash and securities exchanged
- Where breaks happen and how operations and controls catch them
How would you value a company? Talk me through one method and its weak points.
A good answer covers
- A discounted cash flow: forecast cash flows, a discount rate, a terminal value
- Comparing with similar companies using multiples
- How sensitive each method is to assumptions, and when you'd trust one over the other
How would you design a system that recalculates a trading desk's risk every few minutes during the day?
A good answer covers
- Inputs: positions and market data, taken as a consistent snapshot
- Spreading the calculation across many machines and recalculating only what changed
- Speed targets, failures mid-run, checking results and keeping an audit trail
An end-of-day reconciliation shows a cash difference between the bank's records and a custodian's. How would you investigate it?
A good answer covers
- Sizing the break and checking timing differences first
- Matching item by item to find the trades or payments behind it
- Escalating if it's large or old, fixing the cause and recording it
Explain the link between a bond's price and its yield, and why they move in opposite directions.
A good answer covers
- A bond pays fixed coupons; the yield is the return at today's price
- When market rates rise, existing bonds must get cheaper to compete
- A simple numerical example and what duration adds
Pick a recent development in banking or markets and explain how it could affect the bank's clients.
A good answer covers
- The development, described accurately in a sentence or two
- Which clients it affects and how: costs, risks or opportunities
- What the bank could offer them in response
Why Deutsche Bank? Fit and HR questions
Why Deutsche Bank, and why this division rather than another?
A good answer covers
- Something specific about the bank or division that you've researched
- How the work matches your skills and interests
- Why this division over the others you considered
Which of Deutsche Bank's four behaviours comes most naturally to you, and which would you need to work on?
A good answer covers
- One behaviour with a short example
- An honest area to develop, not a disguised strength
- What you are already doing about it
What do you hope to learn in your first year here?
A good answer covers
- Specific skills or knowledge tied to the role
- How you plan to learn them: people, projects, training
- How that would make you more useful to the team
Tips
- Use the STAR method for competency questions and quantify your impact, as Deutsche Bank's own early-careers advice suggests.
- Research the division before you apply; Deutsche Bank's recruiters stress showing genuine interest in the bank and the specific role.
- Take the practice tests before the online assessments, and read the feedback reports the bank sends afterwards.
- If you get a pre-recorded video interview, practise answering out loud to a timer so your answers stay short and structured.
- Learn the four behaviours and link each to an example from university, a society or part-time work.
- For technology roles, be ready to explain the design choices in your own projects in detail, including what you would change.
Practise it out loud
A mock interview asks the way Deutsche Bank's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
