HDFC Bank interview process and practice questions

HDFC Bank hires for branch banking, sales and relationship-manager roles as well as technology, operations, credit and analytics. Candidates commonly report an online aptitude test or a screening interview, then one or two interviews on banking awareness, communication and sales ability, with customers and targets central for front-line roles. The bank publishes five core values: Customer Focus, Operational Excellence, Product Leadership, People and Sustainability.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

Behavioral questions

  1. Tell me about a time you convinced someone to try something new: a product, an idea or a change.

    • Who they were and why they were hesitant
    • How you listened first, then made the case in their terms
    • The result, and what you learned about persuading people
  2. Describe a time you handled an upset customer or member of the public.

    A good answer covers

    • What upset them, in their words
    • How you stayed calm, and what you did to solve the problem
    • How it ended and whether they came back
  3. Tell me about a time you were at risk of missing a target or deadline. What did you do?

    A good answer covers

    • The target and when you saw you were behind
    • What you changed: effort, approach or asking for help
    • The outcome, and how you plan differently now
  4. Tell me about a time you caught an error in a document or calculation before it caused a problem.

    A good answer covers

    • How you noticed it
    • How you checked it and who you told
    • What could have gone wrong, and the habit you keep because of it

Role and technical questions

  1. A customer has a large balance in a savings account and no plan for it. How would you approach the conversation?

    A good answer covers

    • Asking about goals, time horizon, risk appetite and existing products
    • Options that suit them, such as fixed or recurring deposits, mutual funds or insurance, with risks explained
    • Not pushing an unsuitable product, and agreeing a follow-up
  2. What is the repo rate, and how does a change in it affect a bank's loans and deposits?

    A good answer covers

    • The rate at which the RBI lends to banks
    • How changes pass through to loan rates and EMIs, especially loans linked to an external benchmark
    • Effects on deposit rates, demand for loans and the bank's margin
  3. What is KYC, and why must a bank complete it before opening an account?

    A good answer covers

    • Verifying identity and address with valid documents, under RBI rules
    • Preventing fraud, money laundering and accounts in false names
    • Periodic updates and stricter checks for higher-risk customers
  4. How would you offer a credit card to a customer who says they don't want any debt?

    A good answer covers

    • Listening and respecting the concern
    • Explaining responsible use, such as paying the full bill on time to avoid interest
    • Accepting a no gracefully, and noting their preference
  5. What is a non-performing asset, and why do banks watch them closely?

    A good answer covers

    • A loan where interest or principal has been overdue beyond the RBI's limit, usually 90 days
    • Why it hurts: provisions reduce profit and tie up capital
    • How banks manage it: careful lending, early warning signs and collections
  6. How many home-loan customers could one branch in a mid-sized city like Nagpur serve in a year? Talk me through an estimate.

    A good answer covers

    • Households in the branch's area and the share buying a home in a year
    • The share needing a loan and the branch's likely share of them
    • A check against how many applications staff can actually process
  7. For a technology role: how would you keep a mobile banking app working during a festive-season traffic spike?

    A good answer covers

    • Forecasting load and load-testing before the season
    • Scaling the app layer, caching and queues to protect the core banking system
    • Monitoring, limiting less important features under strain, and telling customers if there's a problem
  8. Explain how a UPI payment moves from one bank account to another.

    A good answer covers

    • The payer's app, the NPCI switch, the payer's bank and the payee's bank
    • The UPI ID and PIN, and the debit and credit steps
    • What happens when a payment is pending or fails, and how reversals work

Why HDFC Bank? Fit and HR questions

  1. Introduce yourself and tell me why you'd suit a customer-facing role in a bank.

    A good answer covers

    • Education and any work or internship in a few sentences
    • One example of working well with people
    • Why banking, and this role, is the next step
  2. Why HDFC Bank, and why banking as a career?

    A good answer covers

    • Something specific about the bank: its products, reach or a value
    • What draws you to banking, shown by something you've done
    • Where you'd like to grow within the bank
  3. Are you comfortable working to a sales target and being posted to any branch or city?

    A good answer covers

    • An honest answer, with any real constraint stated clearly
    • Evidence that you can handle targets, from study, work or a project
    • How you'd settle into a new place quickly

Tips

  • Learn the five core values and have one example ready for Customer Focus and one for Operational Excellence.
  • Revise banking basics: repo rate, CRR, KYC, NPAs, types of deposits and loans, and UPI.
  • For sales roles, be honest about targets: explain how you'd build a customer base rather than promising you'd never miss one.
  • Read the bank's recent press releases and RBI announcements so you can talk about current banking news.
  • Apply only through official channels; a request to pay money for an interview or offer letter is a warning sign of fraud.
  • Prepare a short, calm explanation for any gap year or change of stream.

Practise it out loud

A mock interview asks the way HDFC Bank's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
