Company interview guide

ServiceNow interview process and practice questions

ServiceNow builds a cloud platform that companies use to run workflows in IT, HR, customer service and more. Its careers site describes three stages (application, interviews and a decision) and says some roles include a technical coding assessment or a presentation. Candidates commonly report several interviews covering technical depth, past work and how you fit its values, which include 'Wow our customers'.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

The interview process

  1. 1Recruiter screen after an application review
  2. 2Online coding assessment for many engineering roles
  3. 3Technical interviews, often two or three: coding, problem solving and system design for experienced roles
  4. 4A presentation for some roles, such as pre-sales and consulting
  5. 5Hiring manager interview on past work and values
  6. 6Team debrief and decision

What interviewers listen for

  • Wow our customers
  • Working as one team across engineering, product and sales
  • Respect and inclusion towards colleagues
  • Drive to learn, with humility about what you don't know
  • Solid coding and design fundamentals
  • Understanding of how large organisations run IT, HR and service work

Behavioral questions

  1. Tell me about a time you went beyond what a customer or user expected.

    A good answer covers

    • What they expected and what they really needed
    • What you did beyond it and why
    • How they reacted, with evidence if you have it
  2. Tell me about a time you helped a teammate succeed, even though it wasn't your task.

    A good answer covers

    • What the teammate was stuck on
    • What you did and how you balanced it with your own work
    • The result for them and for the team
  3. Tell me about a time you were wrong about something technical. How did you find out, and what did you change?

    A good answer covers

    • What you believed and why it seemed right
    • How you found out: data, a review, a failure
    • How you handled it openly and what you do differently now
  4. Tell me about a time you helped someone new to the team feel included.

    A good answer covers

    • Who they were and what made joining hard
    • Specific things you did, beyond being friendly
    • How they settled in and what you learned

Role and technical questions

  1. What is IT service management? Explain the difference between an incident and a problem to a new joiner.

    A good answer covers

    • Running IT as services for people, with requests, incidents and changes
    • An incident is one disruption to restore fast; a problem is its underlying cause
    • A simple example, such as repeated email outages traced to one server
  2. How would you design a ticketing system that routes each request to the right team automatically?

    A good answer covers

    • What a ticket holds and how requests come in: portal, email, chat
    • Routing by rules first, then learning from past tickets
    • Fallbacks when routing is unsure, and measuring time to resolution
  3. How would you design approval workflows, such as a laptop request needing a manager's sign-off, so steps can change without new code?

    A good answer covers

    • Defining workflows as data: steps, conditions, approvers
    • A workflow engine that runs them and records each step
    • Versioning changes so requests already in progress aren't broken
  4. A workflow that ran fine yesterday is now timing out for one large customer. How would you find the cause?

    A good answer covers

    • What changed: data volume, a configuration, a release
    • Tracing the slow step with logs and timings
    • A safe fix for the customer and a guard so it doesn't recur
  5. How would you make search fast across millions of records in a web application?

    A good answer covers

    • Indexes, or a search engine built on an inverted index
    • Keeping the index up to date as records change
    • Paging, caching and measuring slow queries
  6. Walk me through how you'd present our platform to a customer's head of IT whose request process is slow and manual.

    A good answer covers

    • Starting from their pain: delays, lost requests, no visibility
    • Showing one workflow before and after, not every feature
    • The outcome they'd measure and a clear next step
  7. Explain REST APIs, and how you'd connect two business systems so their data stays in sync.

    A good answer covers

    • Resources, HTTP methods and status codes in plain words
    • Choosing between events or webhooks and scheduled syncs
    • Handling failures: retries, duplicates and conflicting changes

Why ServiceNow? Fit and HR questions

  1. Why ServiceNow? What do you think its platform does for the companies that use it?

    A good answer covers

    • A clear picture of what the platform does, in a sentence or two
    • A reason tied to the role or team
    • What you'd bring to it
  2. ServiceNow's purpose is to make the world work better for everyone. What would that mean in the work you'd do here?

    A good answer covers

    • Who benefits from the work: employees, customers, IT teams
    • An example of a frustrating process that software could fix
    • How your role would contribute
  3. What questions do you have for us about the team or the role?

    A good answer covers

    • Two or three questions you couldn't answer from the website
    • Questions about how success is measured and how the team works
    • Something that shows you've listened during the interview

Tips

  • ServiceNow says interviews, tests and technical challenges must be done without AI help unless it tells you otherwise, so practise solving problems on your own.
  • Learn the basics of IT service management (incidents, requests, changes) so you can talk about the problems the platform solves.
  • For a presentation, start with the customer's problem and the outcome, then show how the solution gets there.
  • Prepare a story about customer impact and one about helping your team; interviewers commonly probe both.
  • ServiceNow University offers no-cost courses and certifications on the platform; a short course can help you talk about it with confidence.

Practise it out loud

A mock interview asks the way ServiceNow's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
