# MBA placement interview questions and what to expect

MBA placement interviews, for both summer internships and final roles, commonly start from your CV: interviewers pick a line and go deep, ask why you chose an MBA and the function, and test business sense with a guesstimate or a short case. Some companies add a group discussion or a short presentation, and the questions shift with the function, such as marketing, finance, consulting or operations.

What candidates commonly report; it varies by employer, level and country. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

## The usual stages

- 1 CV shortlisting, sometimes with an online test
- 2 Group discussion or group case for some companies
- 3 One or more personal interviews on your CV, why an MBA, the function and your past work
- 4 A guesstimate, case or functional questions, often within the interviews
- 5 Final round with senior leaders or HR, sometimes on the same day

## What interviewers check

- A clear, believable story: past work or studies, why an MBA, why this function
- Depth on every line of your CV
- Structured thinking in guesstimates and cases
- Functional basics for the role: marketing, finance, operations or HR
- Awareness of the industry and the company
- Maturity, leadership and teamwork from college or work

## Behavioral questions

- What you did yourself, including one hard call
- The result and what you learned about leading peers

### Tell me about a disagreement in a group project and how it was resolved.

A good answer covers

- Both sides of the disagreement, stated fairly
- What you did to move things forward
- The outcome and how the group worked afterwards

### What was your biggest achievement before your MBA, and what exactly was your part in it?

A good answer covers

- Why it was hard and why it mattered
- Your own actions, separated from the team's
- A measurable result

### Tell me about a setback, such as a competition you lost, a poor grade or a job that didn't work out.

A good answer covers

- What happened, owned honestly
- What you took from it
- How it shaped a later decision

## Questions about the job

### Estimate the number of cars sold in Bengaluru in a year.

A good answer covers

- An approach: households and car ownership, then new buyers plus replacements
- Clear, rounded assumptions said out loud
- A sense-check, and which assumption matters most

### Walk me through your summer internship project: the problem, what you did and what changed.

A good answer covers

- The business problem and why the company cared
- Your approach, data and one key insight
- Your recommendation and what the company did with it

### A biscuit brand is losing market share in small towns. How would you work out why?

A good answer covers

- Splitting by region, channel and pack size, and checking distribution first
- Price, competitors and changing tastes
- A recommendation and how you'd test it

### For a marketing role: how would you launch a new shampoo aimed at college students?

A good answer covers

- Price, pack size, channels and promotion
- How you'd judge the launch in the first three months

### For a finance role: which three numbers would you look at first to judge a company's health, and why?

A good answer covers

- Choices such as revenue growth, operating margin, cash flow and debt levels
- Why each one matters and what it can hide
- Comparing with past years and with competitors

### For an operations role: how would you cut delivery times for an online grocery business?

A good answer covers

- Mapping the order journey from order to doorstep and timing each step
- Ideas such as stores closer to customers, faster picking and better routing
- The cost of each idea and how you'd test it

### What's the difference between a brand manager's job and a sales manager's job?

A good answer covers

- Brand: the product's positioning, pricing, communication and growth over time
- Sales: getting the product to customers and channels and hitting targets
- How the two work together, with an example

### Tell me about a business development you've followed recently. What would you have done in that company's place?

A good answer covers

- The development, summarised in two sentences
- Your view of why the company acted as it did
- What you'd have done, and the risk in your choice

### Group discussion: 'Will online shopping replace local shops?' What would you say first, and how would you handle someone who dominates?

A good answer covers

- A clear opening view with one fact or example
- Bringing in quieter people and steering back to the topic politely
- A summary that pulls the group's points together

## Motivation and fit

A good answer covers

- A short, ordered story of your studies and work
- The reason for the MBA, linked to what came before
- The role you want now and why

### Why this function, and why our company?

A good answer covers

- What draws you to the function, shown by your internship or projects
- Something specific about the company: its brands, markets or way of working
- What you'd bring in your first year

### Why are you moving from your earlier field, such as engineering or IT, to a business role?

A good answer covers

- What in your earlier work pulled you towards business
- Skills that carry over, such as analysis or working with clients
- How you've been filling the gaps

### Where do you see yourself five years after your MBA?

A good answer covers

- A realistic path in this function
- The skills and responsibility you want to build
- How this company fits into that

## Tips

- Know every line of your CV well enough to talk about it for two minutes; interviewers commonly pick lines at random.
- Have one clear, honest answer to 'why MBA' that links your past, the course and the role you want.
- For guesstimates, state your approach first, round the numbers and sense-check the answer.
- Read business news daily in the weeks before placements, focusing on the sectors you're applying to.
- Prepare a short version of your summer project that someone from a different function would follow.
- In a group discussion, a clear structure and a good summary often count for more than talking the most.
