# Zomato interview process and practice questions

Candidates commonly report that Zomato's engineering interviews combine coding and problem-solving rounds with a design round, often on delivery, search or restaurant-discovery problems, and that some roles also meet a hiring manager or the founder's office. Interviewers tend to look for ownership, speed and a clear product opinion. Zomato is part of Eternal, which also runs Blinkit, District and Hyperpure.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

## The interview process

- 1 Coding assessment
- 2 Problem solving / data structures
- 3 Design round
- 4 Hiring manager / founder's office round (some roles)

## What interviewers listen for

- Ownership
- Speed of execution
- Customer obsession
- First-principles thinking
- A clear product opinion, backed by how you'd measure it
- Thinking about restaurants and delivery partners, not only customers

## Behavioral questions

### Tell me about something you built because you thought it should exist.

A good answer covers

- The problem you noticed and who had it
- How you built it, with little or no one asking you to
- Who used it and what you learned from them

### Tell me about a time you worked a problem out from first principles instead of copying how others did it.

A good answer covers

- The usual approach and why it didn't fit your case
- How you broke the problem down to basics
- What you built and how it compared with the usual way

### Describe a mistake of yours that reached users. How did you handle it?

A good answer covers

- What went wrong, owned in the first person
- How quickly you found it, fixed it and told people
- What you changed so it wouldn't happen again

### Tell me about a time you had to deliver with very little guidance. How did you decide what to do first?

A good answer covers

- What was unclear and what was at stake
- How you set priorities and who you checked with
- The result, and what you'd do the same way again

## Role and technical questions

### How would you design a system to show restaurants near a user, sorted by delivery time?

A good answer covers

- Finding restaurants within reach: a geo index and each restaurant's delivery area
- Estimating delivery time per restaurant from preparation time, partner availability and distance
- Keeping it fast: caching by area, and updating when a restaurant closes or gets busy

### How would you design search in a food app so that a misspelt dish, a cuisine and a restaurant name all return useful results?

A good answer covers

- Indexing dishes, restaurants and cuisines together
- Typos, Hindi or regional spellings typed in English, and synonyms
- Ranking by availability, distance and the user's past orders, within a tight time limit

### How would you design restaurant ratings and reviews so they are hard to fake?

A good answer covers

- Linking reviews to real orders and weighting recent ones
- Signals of abuse: new accounts, bursts of reviews, repeated text
- Moderation and a way for restaurants to report unfair reviews

### Walk me through how a ten-minute grocery order could work, from tap to doorstep. Where would you focus engineering effort?

A good answer covers

- Picking the store by stock and distance, then picking and packing inside it
- Assigning a rider who is already near the store
- Measuring each step to find the slowest one, and alerts when a store falls behind

### Restaurants in one city say new orders appear late on their devices. How would you debug it?

A good answer covers

- Confirming scope: which restaurants, devices or app versions, since when
- Tracing an order through each step, from order service to notification to the device
- The fix, plus monitoring of order-to-restaurant delay

### Explain caching to a product manager. When could a cache show customers wrong information?

A good answer covers

- A plain-words explanation with an everyday example
- Stale data: a changed menu price or a closed restaurant still showing
- Fixes: short expiry times or clearing the cache when the data changes

### How would you decide whether to lower the delivery fee in a city? What would you measure?

A good answer covers

- The goal: more orders, new users or winning back lapsed ones
- Who pays for the cut and what it does to margins
- A test in some areas first, with guardrails such as partner earnings and delivery times

## Why Zomato? Fit and HR questions

### What would you improve in the Zomato app, and how would you measure it?

A good answer covers

- A specific flow and the user problem with it, from your own use
- The change you'd make and what you'd leave out
- One main metric and a guardrail, such as order conversion and cancellations

### Why Zomato, and why this team in particular?

A good answer covers

- Something specific about the team's problem or product
- What you bring that fits it, with an example
- What you want to learn there

### Which Eternal business interests you most (Zomato, Blinkit, District or Hyperpure), and why?

A good answer covers

- A clear pick and what you understand about its customers
- A problem in it you'd like to work on
- How your skills fit that problem

## Tips

- Have a product opinion about their app.
- Use the app as a customer the week before and note one thing that annoyed you and how you'd fix it.
- In design rounds, treat restaurants and delivery partners as users of the system too, not only customers.
- For founder's office or business roles, expect open problems; structure your answer and end with a recommendation, not a list.
- Expect to be asked why something should be built at all; start from the user problem before the architecture.

## Practise it out loud

A mock interview asks the way Zomato's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
