# Zoho interview process and practice questions

Zoho is known for hiring on skills rather than credentials: its careers page says it thinks 'beyond the system of credentialism', and Zoho Schools of Learning offers high school graduates a two-year training programme that includes an internship at Zoho. Candidates commonly report that developer hiring leans heavily on hands-on programming, with a written test followed by coding rounds and technical and HR interviews.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

## The interview process

- 1 Written or online test of aptitude and programming (for campus and off-campus drives)
- 2 Hands-on programming round, solving problems on a computer
- 3 A longer programming task: build a small working application in a few hours (for many developer roles)
- 4 Technical interview on your code, projects and fundamentals
- 5 HR round

## What interviewers listen for

- Strength in variety
- Personalized professionalism
- Redefining capital
- The long-term approach
- Putting customers first
- Programming skill shown in working code, whatever your degree or grades
- A willingness to learn

## Behavioral questions

### Tell me about something you taught yourself without a course or a teacher. How did you go about it?

A good answer covers

- What you learned and why
- How you learned it: what you read, built and got stuck on
- Something you made with it

### Tell me about a time you stuck with a hard problem for a long time before you solved it.

A good answer covers

- Why it was hard and what you tried first
- How you kept going and when you asked for help
- The solution and what it taught you

### Describe a time you helped a user or customer who was struggling with something you built or supported.

A good answer covers

- Their problem in their words
- How you understood it and fixed it or worked around it
- What you changed in the product or your work afterwards

### Tell me about a bug in your code that someone else found. What did you do?

A good answer covers

- What the bug was, owned plainly
- How you fixed it and thanked the person who found it
- What you now do to catch such bugs yourself

## Role and technical questions

### How would you build a simple invoicing app for small businesses? What would you build first, and how would you store the data?

A good answer covers

- Core entities: customer, item, invoice, payment, and how they relate
- The first version: create, send and record payment, before reports and extras
- Details that matter: tax such as GST, invoice numbering, rounding

### Explain object-oriented programming using an example you would build, such as a bank account or library system.

A good answer covers

- Classes and objects, encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism, shown in the example
- Why each helps in that example
- When you'd avoid inheritance and use composition instead

### You have a few hours to build a small console application, such as appointment booking for a clinic. How would you plan your time?

A good answer covers

- Listing the features and deciding the order to build them
- Choosing classes and data structures before coding
- Getting the main flow working first, then edge cases such as full slots and cancellations

### How does a web app keep a user logged in? Explain sessions, cookies and tokens.

A good answer covers

- Session IDs stored on the server versus signed tokens the client holds
- Where cookies fit, and settings that protect them
- Logging out, expiry, and what happens if a token is stolen

### How would you design search for a business email product so it's fast and keeps each customer's data separate?

A good answer covers

- An index per mailbox or per customer, updated as mail arrives
- Access checks on every query so no one sees another customer's mail
- Ranking, speed for large mailboxes, and encryption

### A customer says a report in your product shows the wrong totals. How would you handle it?

A good answer covers

- Acknowledging it quickly and reproducing it with their data
- Likely causes: time zones, rounding, filters, duplicate records
- The fix, an update to the customer, and a test that would catch it again

### Explain database normalisation. When might you choose to denormalise?

A good answer covers

- Removing duplicated data so each fact lives in one place
- The normal forms in plain words, with an example table
- Denormalising for read speed, and the cost of keeping copies in sync

## Why Zoho? Fit and HR questions

### Why Zoho? What do you know about the products it builds and the customers who use them?

A good answer covers

- A few Zoho products and the kind of businesses that use them
- What draws you to building software products
- Something about how Zoho says it works that suits you

### Are you open to relocating to wherever the team you join is based, even if it's a smaller town?

A good answer covers

- An honest answer, with any limits stated clearly
- What you'd value about working there
- How you'd settle in and keep learning

### Where do you want your skills to be in five years?

A good answer covers

- A realistic picture of the work you want to be doing
- The skills you plan to build to get there
- How a long stay at a product company fits that plan

## Tips

- Zoho's careers page says it looks beyond credentials; let your code and projects do the talking, whatever your degree or college.
- Practise writing complete, working programs from scratch in one language you know well; the programming rounds reward fluent basics.
- In a longer build task, get the core flow working first and add features one at a time; a working small app beats a half-finished big one.
- Learn what a few Zoho products do (for example CRM, Books, Desk and Mail) so you can connect your answers to real customers.
- If you're finishing school, Zoho Schools of Learning is a separate route from graduate hiring; check its official page for current eligibility.

## Practise it out loud

A mock interview asks the way Zoho's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
