# Shopify interview process and practice questions

Shopify builds commerce software for merchants, and its interviews are known for 'The Life Story', a conversation with a recruiter about the choices, wins and setbacks in your career, which Shopify describes on its careers site. For engineering roles, candidates commonly report a coding exercise, a pair-programming session and a technical deep dive into a past project; other crafts often have a craft assessment and team interviews.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

## The interview process

- 1 Recruiter screen
- 2 'Life story' conversation about your path and choices
- 3 Technical interviews, often pair programming
- 4 Team or lead interview

## What interviewers listen for

- Thriving on change
- Building for merchants
- Ownership
- Learning fast
- Accept our mission
- Thrive on change
- Chase excellence
- Impact, readiness, trust, engagement and self-awareness (the traits Shopify's engineering blog says the Life Story looks for)

## Behavioral questions

### Tell me about a time things changed fast at work. What did you do?

A good answer covers

- What changed and how little notice you had
- How you re-planned and what you let go of
- The result, and what you'd do the same way next time

### Tell me about one of your bruises: a decision that went wrong and what you learned from it.

A good answer covers

- A real mistake, owned plainly
- What you saw at the time and what you missed
- What you do differently now, with an example

### Tell me about the achievement you're proudest of. What impact did it have, and on whom?

A good answer covers

- Why it was hard and what your part was
- The impact on users, customers or the team, with a number if you have one
- Why it matters to you more than other wins

### Tell me about a time you taught yourself something hard because the work needed it.

A good answer covers

- What you had to learn and why it couldn't wait
- How you learned it: building, reading, asking people
- What you delivered and how you keep learning now

## Role and technical questions

### Who are Shopify's merchants, and what would you build for them?

A good answer covers

- The range of merchants, from first-time sellers to large brands
- One specific merchant problem, such as selling across channels or managing stock
- What you'd build first and how you'd know it helped merchants sell more

### Walk me through a project you know well: the architecture, the trade-offs you made and what you'd do differently.

A good answer covers

- The business goal and a short picture of the architecture
- Two or three decisions, the options you rejected and why
- What broke or surprised you, and what you'd change now

### In a pair-programming session, how do you share your thinking with your partner? Talk me through how you'd start a new task.

A good answer covers

- Restating the task and asking clarifying questions first
- Thinking aloud, starting simple and running code early
- Edge cases, tests, and inviting your partner's ideas

### How would you design a checkout that keeps working when a merchant's flash sale brings ten times the usual traffic?

A good answer covers

- Where the load lands: product pages, carts, inventory, payments
- Queues, caching and limits that protect the system without losing orders
- Not overselling stock, and what shoppers see when things slow down

### A merchant says orders stopped appearing in their admin an hour ago. How would you investigate?

A good answer covers

- Checking scope first: one merchant or many, since when
- Following an order through the system using logs and metrics
- Keeping the merchant updated and fixing the cause, not just the symptom

### How would you design inventory tracking that keeps stock counts right across an online store and a physical shop?

A good answer covers

- One source of truth for stock and how each channel updates it
- Handling two sales of the last item at the same moment
- What happens when a shop's connection drops, and how counts are reconciled

## Why Shopify? Fit and HR questions

### Walk me through your life story: the big choices and why you made them.

A good answer covers

- Three or four turning points, in order, not a list of every job
- Why you made each choice and what you learned from it
- How the path leads to this role at Shopify

### Why Shopify, and what does making commerce better for everyone mean to you?

A good answer covers

- A reason tied to merchants and the products, not only the brand
- A personal link: a business you know, a store you built, a problem you saw
- The kind of work you want to do here

### What do you want to learn in your next role, and how will you know you're growing?

A good answer covers

- One or two specific skills, not a general wish to grow
- How you plan to build them and the support you'd look for
- A sign of progress you'd check after a year

## Tips

- For the life-story round, explain why you made each choice, not just what you did.
- Before the Life Story, list your turning points, proudest wins and hardest moments; Shopify says it wants to hear about the trophies and the bruises.
- In pair programming, think aloud and ask your partner questions. Shopify's engineering blog says a well-reasoned incomplete solution beats a fragile finished one.
- For the technical deep dive, pick a project with real business trade-offs rather than a solo side project, and treat it as a conversation.
- Try the product as a merchant would, for example by setting up a test store, so you can talk about it from experience.

## Practise it out loud

A mock interview asks the way Shopify's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
