# Netflix interview process and practice questions

Netflix interviews lean heavily on its culture memo, which it publishes on its careers site and which names values such as Judgment, Candor, Courage and Selflessness. Its new-grad page says candidates may be asked which parts of the memo resonate with them, or don't, and candidates commonly report culture-focused conversations alongside technical or functional interviews.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

### Tell me about a decision you made without asking for permission. How did it go?

A good answer covers

- The context you had and why you felt able to decide

### What feedback have you received that changed how you work?

A good answer covers

- Evidence the change stuck

### Tell me about a time you made an important call with incomplete information.

A good answer covers

- What you knew, what you didn't, and the cost of waiting

- How you fully supported it afterwards, and what happened

### Tell me about a risk you took that didn't work out.

A good answer covers

- Why the risk was worth taking at the time

## Role and technical questions

A good answer covers

- Signals: viewing history, ratings, time of day, what similar members watch
- Candidate generation then ranking, and handling new members and new titles
- How you'd measure success beyond clicks, such as finishing what they start

### How would you design video streaming so playback starts quickly and adapts to a weak connection?

A good answer covers

- The player choosing quality chunk by chunk, with caches close to viewers
- Measuring start time, rebuffering and picture quality

### How would you test a change to the home page with members before rolling it out to everyone?

A good answer covers

- An A/B test with a clear main metric and guardrails
- Sample size, test length and splitting by device or region
- How you'd decide when results are mixed

A good answer covers

- Timeouts, retries with backoff, and circuit breakers
- Fallbacks that degrade gracefully, such as cached or default results
- Testing failure on purpose before it happens for real

## Why Netflix? Fit and HR questions

### Which part of the Netflix culture memo resonates with you most, and which would you find hardest?

A good answer covers

- A specific part of the memo, named accurately
- An example from your own work that shows it
- An honest answer about the hard part and how you'd handle it

### Why Netflix, and why this role now?

A good answer covers

- What draws you to the team's work and to Netflix's way of working
- Why this is the right step in your career now
- What you'd contribute in the first months

### What would you want to know about how this team works before deciding to join?

A good answer covers

- Questions about how decisions and feedback work on the team
- What great performance looks like in the role
- Questions that show you've read the culture memo

## Tips

- Read the Netflix culture memo before the interview.
- Be direct and specific; they value candor over polish.
- Form a view on parts of the memo such as the keeper test and 'disagree then commit'; interviewers may ask what you think.
- Netflix's new-grad page says that process typically includes a take-home assessment and two rounds of interviews; experienced roles vary, so ask your recruiter.
- When you describe a decision, give the context you had, the call you made, and how you'd decide again.

## Practise it out loud

A mock interview asks the way Netflix's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
