# IBM interview process and practice questions

IBM hires for consulting, software, infrastructure and research roles, and its careers site describes the usual steps: application, screening, one or two online assessments depending on the role (such as a coding test, a recorded video interview or an English test), interviews and a decision. IBM says it uses structured or behavioural interviews, and for entry-level developers candidates commonly report a technical interview followed by a behavioural round with management.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

## The interview process

- 1 Online assessment (cognitive and coding tests)
- 2 Technical interview
- 3 Manager / HR interview

## What interviewers listen for

- Dedication to every client's success
- Innovation that matters
- Trust and personal responsibility
- Learning and adaptability
- Trust and personal responsibility in all relationships
- Explaining your reasoning, not just the final answer

## Behavioral questions

### Tell me about a time you learned a new technology for a project.

A good answer covers

- Why the project needed it and how much time you had
- How you learned it: docs, small experiments, asking others
- What you delivered with it and what you'd learn differently now

### Tell me about a time you put a client's or user's success ahead of the easier option for you.

A good answer covers

- What the easy option was and why it fell short for them
- What the extra effort involved
- The outcome for the client or user

### Tell me about a mistake you made that affected others. How did you take responsibility?

A good answer covers

- The mistake and who it affected, stated plainly
- How quickly you told people and what you did to fix it
- What you changed so it wouldn't happen again

### Tell me about a time you worked with people from another team or country to deliver something.

A good answer covers

- The goal and who was involved
- A difficulty, such as time zones or different priorities, and how you handled it
- What was delivered and what you learned about working across teams

## Role and technical questions

### How would you explain a technical idea to a client who isn't technical?

A good answer covers

- Starting from what the client cares about: cost, risk, time
- An everyday comparison instead of jargon, with an example
- Checking they understood and inviting questions

### Explain the difference between public, private and hybrid cloud, and why a company might choose hybrid.

A good answer covers

- Public: shared provider infrastructure; private: dedicated to one organisation
- Hybrid: both, working together
- Reasons for hybrid: regulation, existing systems, cost, keeping some data in-house

### What is a container, and how does a platform like Kubernetes help run containers at scale?

A good answer covers

- A container packages an app with what it needs to run the same way anywhere
- How it differs from a virtual machine
- What Kubernetes adds: scheduling, scaling, restarts and rolling updates

### Walk me through your final-year project or a recent project: the problem, your part and what you'd improve.

A good answer covers

- The problem and why it mattered
- Your own part, the technology and one hard decision
- Results, and what you'd improve with more time

### A client wants to use AI to answer its customers' questions. What would you ask before recommending an approach?

A good answer covers

- The business goal and how success will be measured
- The data available, privacy rules and what must never go wrong
- Starting small with a pilot, with people checking answers

### What does ACID mean for a database, and why does it matter for a bank's transactions?

A good answer covers

- Atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability, each in a plain line
- A money transfer as the example: both sides happen or neither does
- What could go wrong without these guarantees

## Why IBM? Fit and HR questions

### Tell me about yourself.

A good answer covers

- Your background in two or three sentences: studies or current role
- One or two things you've built or achieved that fit this role
- Why you're interested in IBM and this team now

### Why IBM, and which part of its business interests you most: consulting, software or infrastructure?

A good answer covers

- Something specific you know about IBM's work
- The area you chose and why it suits your skills
- What you hope to learn there

### Where do you see yourself in five years, and how would IBM help you get there?

A good answer covers

- A realistic direction, such as deeper technical skill or client leadership
- Steps you'd take, including learning and certifications
- How this role is the right first step

## Tips

- IBM's careers site says the online stage may include a coding test, a recorded video interview or an English test, depending on the role; check your invite for which ones apply.
- For a work-style questionnaire, answer as you really are and go with your first instinct, as IBM's assessment FAQ suggests.
- Explain your reasoning in assessments and interviews, not just the final answer; IBM's own advice for entry-level developers says this.
- In the technical interview, be honest about gaps and say how you'd learn the topic.
- Prepare questions about client work, learning and career growth for the end of the interview.

## Practise it out loud

A mock interview asks the way IBM's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
