# Citi interview process and practice questions

Citi's student hiring, as its careers site describes it, usually runs from a skills evaluation (a coding assessment for technology programmes) to a one-on-one first interview on your background and goals, then a final stage of several interviews, an assessment or a case study. Interviews often reflect Citi's Leadership Principles: we take ownership, we deliver with pride and we succeed together.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

## The interview process

- 1 Online application
- 2 Skills evaluation: a coding assessment for technology programmes, or a skills survey for some others
- 3 First interview: one-on-one, on your background and how your goals fit Citi
- 4 Final stage: several interviews, an assessment or a case study, varying by programme and location

## What interviewers listen for

- We take ownership
- We deliver with pride
- We succeed together
- Care with risk, controls and accuracy
- Understanding clients' needs, including clients that work across countries
- Clear problem solving in technical or case questions

## Behavioral questions

### Tell me about a time you took ownership of a problem nobody else had picked up.

A good answer covers

- What the problem was and why it had been left
- What you did, step by step, and who you brought in
- The result and how you made sure it stayed fixed

### Tell me about a piece of work you were proud of because of how carefully it was done.

A good answer covers

- What the work was and why care mattered
- The checks and standards you set yourself
- How it was received and what it led to

### Describe a time you learnt something important from someone with a very different view.

A good answer covers

- How their view differed from yours
- What you did to understand it rather than argue
- How it changed the result or your thinking

### Tell me about a time you spotted a risk early. What did you do?

A good answer covers

- The risk and how you noticed it
- Who you told and what you proposed
- What was avoided, and what you learnt

## Role and technical questions

### What does a bank's treasury and trade services business do for a multinational company?

A good answer covers

- Managing cash across countries: collecting, paying and moving money
- Trade finance, such as letters of credit, that helps companies buy and sell abroad
- Why companies value it: visibility of cash, lower risk, less manual work

### Explain foreign exchange risk to a company that sells abroad, and one way it can reduce it.

A good answer covers

- Revenue in another currency can be worth less when converted back
- Hedging with forward contracts or options, or matching costs to the same currency
- The trade-off: certainty against cost and giving up gains

### Why do banks put so many controls on payments, and what could go wrong without them?

A good answer covers

- Controls such as approvals, limits, sanctions screening and reconciliations
- Risks without them: fraud, errors, money laundering, regulatory penalties
- Balancing strong controls with fast service for clients

### How would you design a service that sends payments across countries and makes sure none is sent twice?

A good answer covers

- A unique ID for each payment so a retry can't create a second one
- Recording each payment's state and confirming with the receiving side
- Handling failures, timeouts and audits, and reconciling at the end of each day

### Explain the difference between a REST API and a message queue, and when you'd use each.

A good answer covers

- REST: a caller asks and waits for an answer; a queue: messages are left for others to process
- REST for lookups and immediate actions; queues for spikes, retries and decoupled systems
- An example from a project you've worked on

### A key report for regulators is late every month. How would you find out why and fix it?

A good answer covers

- Mapping the steps, data sources and owners behind the report
- Finding where time goes: late data, manual fixes, approvals
- A fix with clear owners, and a check that the report is right as well as on time

## Why Citi? Fit and HR questions

### Tell me about yourself and why you applied to this programme.

A good answer covers

- Your background in a few lines, focused on what's relevant
- One achievement that shows the skills the programme needs
- How the programme fits what you want to do next

### Why Citi, and why this programme?

A good answer covers

- What the programme does and the clients it serves
- Why that work fits your skills and interests
- Something specific about Citi you learnt from its people or events

### Where do you want to be in five years, and how would this role help you get there?

A good answer covers

- A realistic goal linked to the programme
- The skills and experience you expect to build
- Commitment to doing this role well first

## Tips

- Citi says its first interview goes into your background and how your aspirations align with Citi's; have a short, clear story linking the two.
- Prepare an example for each Leadership Principle: taking ownership, delivering with pride and succeeding together.
- Citi serves many clients that work across countries; be ready to discuss cross-border payments, trade and currency basics.
- For technology programmes, practise coding problems under time limits and explain your code's complexity and how you'd test it.
- If the final stage includes a case study, set out your structure, show the numbers you used, and end with a recommendation.

## Practise it out loud

A mock interview asks the way Citi's interviewers are known to, follows up on your answers and gives you a report. The warm-up is free, needs no account and checks five of these questions as you answer.
