# Bain & Company interview process and practice questions

Bain's consulting interviews usually start with a digital assessment and move to case interviews, which Bain says look at how you think and structure a problem as it unfolds rather than at a single right answer, alongside questions on your experience and why Bain. For other roles, Bain's careers site says interviews vary and may include a coding challenge, a portfolio walkthrough or a written assignment.

As candidates commonly report it; it varies by team, level and year. Last reviewed 18 October 2026.

## The interview process

- 1 Application review, sometimes with a recruiter call
- 2 Digital assessment for many consulting roles: problem solving, communication and analytical skills
- 3 First round: case interviews plus questions on your experience
- 4 Final round: more case and behavioural interviews, often with senior team members
- 5 For non-consulting roles: a coding challenge, portfolio walkthrough or written assignment instead of a case (varies)

## What interviewers listen for

- Passion & Commitment
- Honesty & Openness
- Practical
- One Team
- True North: doing the right thing by clients, people and communities
- Curiosity and a love of solving problems
- Focus on results for clients, not just analysis

## Behavioral questions

### Tell me about a time you were open about a mistake or problem when it would have been easier to stay quiet.

A good answer covers

- What happened and why staying quiet was tempting
- Who you told, how quickly, and what you proposed to fix it
- How it turned out and what it did for trust

### Tell me about a time you helped a teammate succeed, even though it wasn't your job.

A good answer covers

- What they were struggling with and why you stepped in
- What you did and what it cost you in time
- The result for them and the team

### Tell me about a time you chose a practical solution over a perfect one. Was it the right call?

A good answer covers

- The perfect option and why it wasn't realistic
- What you chose and how you made sure it was good enough
- The result, and what you'd decide now

### Describe something you committed to and saw through despite setbacks.

A good answer covers

- The goal and why it mattered to you
- The setbacks and how you kept going
- What you achieved in the end

## Role and technical questions

### A private equity firm is thinking of buying a chain of dental clinics. What would you want to know before advising it?

A good answer covers

- The market: demand, growth, competition and regulation
- The chain itself: revenue per clinic, margins, dentists' retention, room to open more
- How the investor could add value, the main risks, and a clear view on whether to proceed

### A sports shoe brand's profits fell while its sales stayed flat. How would you structure the problem?

A good answer covers

- Flat sales but lower profit points to costs or mix: say so early
- Checking price discounts, product mix, materials, shipping and marketing spend
- The likely cause, how to confirm it, and what you'd recommend

### A food delivery company wants to launch in a new city. How would you decide whether it's worth it?

A good answer covers

- Demand: population, restaurants, online ordering habits
- Economics per order: fees, delivery costs, discounts, and when the city breaks even
- Competition, a recommendation, and a way to test before a full launch

### Estimate how many hair salons there are in Bengaluru.

A good answer covers

- Starting from population and how often people get a haircut
- How many customers one salon serves in a day, with round numbers
- A final number and a quick sense check

### Quick maths: if a product's price rises 10% and the volume sold falls 5%, what happens to revenue?

A good answer covers

- Multiplying the changes: 1.10 times 0.95
- The answer: revenue rises by about 4.5%
- What it means: the price rise pays off if costs don't change much

### Your analysis points one way, but the client's chief executive strongly believes the opposite. How would you handle the next meeting?

A good answer covers

- Rechecking your analysis and understanding the reasons behind their view
- Presenting the evidence clearly and respectfully, and inviting their challenge
- Agreeing a way forward, such as a test or more data, with the client team

## Why Bain & Company? Fit and HR questions

### Tell me about yourself and walk me through your CV.

A good answer covers

- A short path through your studies and work, with the reason for each step
- One or two results you're proud of
- What brings you to Bain now

### Why Bain, and what do you know about how it works with clients?

A good answer covers

- Something specific about Bain's approach or people that matters to you
- How it fits the way you like to work
- What you'd bring to a case team

### Which industry or type of problem would you most like to work on, and why?

A good answer covers

- A specific choice, not 'anything'
- Why it interests you, shown by something you've studied or done
- A question you'd want to answer for a client in that area

## Tips

- Bain says there isn't necessarily one right answer in a case; it watches how you structure the problem and build on ideas as the case moves.
- Don't force a memorised framework; adapt your structure to the problem this client faces and say why.
- Practise mental maths: percentages, growth rates and break-even, without a calculator.
- Practise cases out loud with a partner and reflect on the feedback after each one, rather than cramming at the end.
- Bain's careers site says it never interviews over instant messaging and never asks candidates to pay; treat messages like that as a warning sign.
