## The interview process

- 1 Online application, with an online assessment or coding test for some roles
- 2 Recruiter screen
- 3 Interviews with the hiring manager: your experience, behavioural questions and technical or case questions
- 4 Final round with the wider team; for some student programmes, an assessment centre with case studies

## What interviewers listen for

- We Do What's Right
- We Back Our Customers
- We Make It Great
- We Respect People
- We Embrace Diversity
- We Stand for Equity and Inclusion
- We Win As a Team
- We Support Communities
- Careful use of data and sound judgement on risk
- Clear communication with colleagues, customers and partners

## Behavioral questions

### Tell me about a time you went out of your way to fix a problem for a customer or user.

A good answer covers

- Who they were and what was going wrong for them
- What you did beyond the usual, and why
- The result for them, and anything you changed so it didn't recur

### Tell me about a time you raised the quality bar on a piece of work.

A good answer covers

- What 'good enough' looked like and why you aimed higher
- What you improved and how you checked it
- The difference it made, ideally measured

### Tell me about a time you chose the right course of action over the quickest one.

A good answer covers

- The shortcut and why it was tempting
- Why you didn't take it, and who you involved
- The outcome and what it taught you

### Describe a time your team succeeded because of how you worked together, not only individual effort.

A good answer covers

- The goal and who was on the team
- How you shared work, helped each other and handled disagreement
- The result and your part in it

## Role and technical questions

### How would you decide whether to approve a credit limit increase for a cardholder? What data would you use?

A good answer covers

- Repayment history, current balances, income signals and how the card is used
- Weighing extra spending and customer loyalty against the risk of default
- How you'd test the rule fairly and monitor it once live

### A new card's sign-ups are strong, but spending per card is lower than expected. How would you investigate?

A good answer covers

- Checking whether new cardholders are activating the card and using it at all
- Splitting by customer group, channel and merchant type
- Likely causes and what you'd test: offers, reminders, or a change in who's being targeted

### Explain how a card payment works from the moment a customer pays to when the merchant gets the money.

A good answer covers

- The parties: cardholder, merchant, card network and card issuer
- Authorisation at the time of payment, then clearing and settlement
- Where fees are charged and where fraud checks happen

### How would you design a service that flags possibly fraudulent card transactions within a second?

A good answer covers

- A fast scoring step using rules and a model, with features such as location and spending pattern
- What happens next: approve, decline or ask the customer to confirm
- Keeping it fast and available, learning from confirmed fraud, and protecting customer data

### Explain precision and recall to a business partner, and which matters more in fraud detection.

A good answer covers

- Precision: of the cases flagged, how many were really fraud; recall: of all fraud, how much was caught
- The trade-off: catching more fraud versus annoying good customers
- How you'd choose the balance using the cost of each kind of mistake

### Walk me through a project where you used data to change a decision.

A good answer covers

- The decision and who was making it
- The data and methods you used
- What changed because of your work

## Why American Express? Fit and HR questions

### Tell me about yourself and why you're interested in this role.

A good answer covers

- Your background in a few lines, focused on what's relevant
- One achievement that shows the skills the role needs
- Why this team at American Express is the next step

### Why American Express, and why this team?

A good answer covers

- Something specific about how American Express serves its customers
- What the team does and why it fits your skills
- What you'd want to learn in your first year

### Which Blue Box Value means the most to you, and when have you shown it?

A good answer covers

- One value, named once
- A short, specific example
- Why it matters in the role you've applied for

## Tips

- Prepare a story for each Blue Box Value, especially backing customers and doing what's right.
- For analytics and risk roles, be ready to talk through how you'd measure a customer decision and what could go wrong with it.
- For engineering roles, expect coding plus a design discussion; bring up security, reliability and protection of customer data.
- Learn how card payments work end to end, and what makes a card valuable to both cardholders and merchants.
- Ask the recruiter what each interview will focus on, so you can prepare the right mix of stories and technical work.
